Why do Ukrainian women seek husbands abroad?

This is a complex question, and cannot be answered simply. I am sure you have read something on this topic already, or have heard a lot about this phenomenon of RW, both positive and negative. I’d better try to speak about the reasons for the girls in Kharkov who are members of “All Beautiful” agency (many of them are my friends and associates, people whom I have known for some time). There are three groups of women who join an international dating service. First group is women who so to say lost hope. They either have a bad financial situation, or have two kids or more, and chances they will find a decent Ukrainian man who will marry them and take responsibility for a large family or big expenses, are low. Second group consists of those girls (mostly professionals, bright personalities, middle age) who are single, quite possibly have never been married, are educated, smart, who know what type of man they need, but have not met him yet (as the number of really eligible men who answer criteria for creating a strong family is limited in the Ukraine). They try their luck in searching for such a man abroad – while they are usually aware they will have to change a lot in their lives, but are not afraid of it, if it is really their destiny and there are many matching points in the created international relationship. By my observations these women make the best wives for foreigners. And the third group are young girls (18-22) who are joining an agency out of curiosity, because they are single, and maybe a friend of their has married a foreigner and is happy now. Their potential and chances are high as well, first of all because more and more young Ukrainians are speaking good English nowadays, they are students at higher educations institutions, they have a cosmopolitan outlook and in fact the cultural and traditional borders are thinner for them rather than for those raised in the Soviet Union times. The younger generation would easier adjust to new cultural environment, and living in a Western country is not something frightening for them.

Do women in Kharkov speak English?

I have written in the topic above that more and more young people are speaking English in Kharkov, as there are an increased number of foreign language focused secondary schools, English courses at Universities, and a number of language schools and courses for those who have graduated. Since English has been taught in school program, almost everybody knows basics of English (alphabet, general words), but Russians and Ukrainians have been known for having adaptive, smart minds and ability to study. In my practice many women who started dating a foreigner signed up for private lessons of a foreign language, and, being very purposeful and determined, have mastered it very rapidly.

Is a Ukrainian woman’s character different from that of an American woman?

It is hard for me to judge as I am a woman, the best judge would be a man who has lived enough time in USA, and then enough time in the Ukraine :-). But I have lived in the USA for some time, and have communicated with women there, so I can make some observations. One of my brightest impressions was going out to a bar/disco. I was surprised with a striking difference of American women behavior. They have been glancing around seeking for a man suitable, then come up and introduce themselves to the man they like. This behavior is rather unusual for Ukrainian scene. Women in Kharkov are more traditional as to courting situation, they would wait while a man pays attention to her first, and prefer to play second role on the dating scene. In general, Ukrainian women are milder, not so sharp in behavior, and I would say, more feminine and gentle. I would also say Ukrainian women are not so “consumer” in their attitude towards men, are more romantic and tender. But of course it depends on individual character of every person.

Is there any difference between Russian and Ukrainian women?

I would say yes, though it is very hard to determine exactly what it is. First of all in every city general character of its inhabitants differ, like if to compare Moscowers and Kharkovites, the former are more aggressive, cosmopolitan, urbanistic, while the latter are more gentle, traditions oriented, and less materialistic. Not to say more beautiful :-)

Would my Ukrainian wife prefer to work or to stay at home?

This question should be discussed on an individual basis. One woman would prefer to stay at home and take care of the family and children, while another one does not imagine her life without going to work and having some social life. But here I would warn that even such a woman would always place her family in the first place, and would sacrifice her carrier in favor of family, if she is put in front of such a choice. But you should discuss the woman you correspond with preferences as earlier as possible, to see if her expectations of future life match yours.

What kind of humor Ukrainian women have? Do they laugh and smile a lot?

I am planning to come to Kharkov in six months from now. Can I correspond for so long? Will the girls be interested? While the ideal scenario would be to correspond for one –three months and then arrange a meeting, women here do realize overseas trip is rather expensive venture, and takes time to organize leave from work, so they are OK with waiting for more than three months. But please do not ask them to wait for twelve months – it can happen that by the time you are ready the women may be engaged with someone who have visited in three weeks! To speak seriously, much depends whether you establish deep interest in each other, and learn about each other enough to keep the curiosity and thrill for long time, then even the six months will fly like a minute.

I am not planning to get married after my first trip to Kharkov. I would like to get to know the girl I will choose, and date her for some time. Do the girls expect marriage proposal at once?

No, of course not! Quite often the girls would prefer to learn about the man whom they like so much enough, to make this serious decision – marriage commitment. In the experience of our agency quite often the established couples have met two or three times before the man applied for fianc?e visa. And this is quite normal situation, for both a man and a woman.

Is a girl who joins an agency ready to marry immediately? As I am traveling all this way to find future wife and get married, and it would be enough to have several meetings to decide on marriage.

It is common for Russian/Ukrainian mentality and culture not to plan things, but rely on God’s divine intent. So, when a girl decides to join a marriage agency, she views it as another chance and way of meeting her Soul mate, and not as a way to leave the country, a tool to change her life only. There are many girls on the agencies that think this way – if I meet a nice, reliable man we feel compatibility and perspective of future together, I will consider leaving my home and country to follow him. But I would never take the first chance and marry first foreigner who proposes, to use it as way to leave my country. For such girls second, third meetings with the man in her country are necessary, as she simply would not be ready to decide on the future together on his first visit to her country.

I am planning to visit a girl I am in correspondence with, I want to ask to stay in her apartment. Can I do so?

Please imagine yourself in her place. You are getting letters from some stranger, whose way of writing you like, the things he is writing seem to be nice (though not proven), and his voice on the phone sounds pleasant. But that is all you have to make a decision whether he is what he seems to be. You have never looked into his eyes, have never seen facial expressions, gestures, behavior. What if you both don’t like each other at your first meeting? And giving your promise to live in your apartment, will have to stay together for some time? Or simply he can be weird or even a maniac… So, my professional advice would be to stay in hotel or apartment on your first visit of the girl, and later, when you both like each other, decide on staying at her place.
